1 March 2022

Jakarta, 28 February 2022 – MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, with members PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Timah, succeeded in its reclamation obligation of 931.25 hectares throughout 2021.  While up to 2021, total reclamation came to 5,814 hectares.

MIND ID’s Director of Institutional Relations, Dany Amrul, said that “The reclamation activities of MIND ID Members reflect their commitment to implement good governance and operational practice. The reclamation activities which have been conducted are part of the mining operational cycle of the MIND ID Group and shall be continually implemented throughout its operational activities.”

As a company managing natural resources, the MIND ID Group is aware of the changes to the landscape in mining and mineral processing activities.  Therefore, reclamation and biodiversity are aspects which the MIND ID Group gives particular attention to.  Cautionary principles are adopted at every activity to minimize operational impact.

The reclamation policy of the MIND ID Group complies with Law No 3 of 2020 on Amendment to Law No 4 of 2009 on Mineral and Coal Mining.  The MIND ID Group is commitment to implement reclamation and post mining obligations with a 100% success rate.  Companies are also required to comply with the placement of reclamation and/or post mining guarantees in line with the prevailing regulations.  The total reclamation and/or post mining guarantees of the MIND ID Group came to Rp799.33 billion.

Aside from the reclamation obligation conducted every year, the MIND ID Group undertakes efforts to provide added value by entering the aspect of local economic improvements to the Company’s reclamation concept.  At PT Bukit Asam Tbk, a portion of the former mined land at Tambang Air Laya has been allocated to fish ponds to support food security.  Now 2.5 hectares of fish ponds are being managed by 25 partner groups.  In 2021, the production from these fishponds in the form of various local fish species such as Lele, Nila, Gurami, Patin and Baung, generated Rp 582 million.

While at PT Timah Tbk, 17.7 hectares of former mined land are being prepared as an agro-tourism site, called Kampong Reklamasi Selinsing.  This agro-tourism site shall be management professionally by the Village-Owned Enterprise, with various facilities to attract tourists.  What’s interesting is that this tourism site is supported by 10 kwp capacity Solar Power Generator to assist operations.

In future, the MIND ID Group shall also conduct the measurement of carbon absorption from the reclamation activities as a manifestation of its decarbonization commitment.  Beyond the reclamation obligation, the MIND ID Group is also participating in other tree planting programs.  At PT Inalum (Persero), in 2015-2021, as many as 590,413 trees have been planted in an area of 1.056 hectares located in 7 Regencies surrounding Lake Toba.  These activities were participated by the Forestry Agency/KPH/NGOs/Community groups, Forestry Farmers Group/Indonesian Army/Police.  In 2022, Inalum plans to plant 308,148 trees consisting of 130,000 trees (260 ha) as part of the Lake Toba Watershed Area Conservation Program and 178.148 trees (445.37 ha) as part of the Natural Resource Management Services Program in cooperation with PJT1.

The MIND ID Group is aware of sustainability aspects in every operational activity following one of the company's Sustainability Roadmaps, namely Smart Operation. "The company is consistent in carrying out this effort with hard work following applicable regulations, both KLHK and MEMR," said Dany. "The MIND ID Group also strives to meet ICMM (International Council on Mining and Metals) standards as a form of commitment to operational governance following world-class standards," he added.
